    Summary

A small Pfam family PFAM:PF09187 {Domain of unknown function(DUF1950) } with 8 members in NR and 12 in the Uniprot TrEMBL database. The first structural representative solved (PDB Id: TOPSAN:1vk5)[Ref], structural similarity search yielded no similar structures, thus suggesting that it is a novel fold.

Proteins from this family are found only in plants. Recently a function of an Arabidopsis homolog was identified as a new regulator of RNA directed DNA methylation (RdDM) [PMID: 11679764]. The loss-of-function mutations in the RDM1 gene reduce DNA methylation. The release of the transcriptional gene that silences the RdDMtarget loci and diminishes the accumulation of 24-nt siRNAs. RDM1 encodes a small protein that appears to bind single-stranded methyl DNA and associates and co-localizes with RNA polymerase II, AGO4 and DRM2 in the nucleus.
