    Summary

    In Thermotoga maritima, this gene (TM0442, named GntE) is located in the galacturonate utilization gene cluster. Galacturonate is a sugar acid found mostly in the pectin polysaccharide. The gntE-containing gene cluster in T.maritima is highly upregulated in the presence of pectin. Metabolic reconstruction of the galacturonate catabolic pathway in T. maritima suggests that GntE is a novel epimerase involved in processing of mannonate to gluconate intermediates in this pathway. In the genomes, gntE is often clustered on the chromosome with gluconate kinase and gluconate-phosphate dehydrogenase suggesting that the predicted function of GntE gluconate:mannonate epimerase) is conserved in many other bacterial species.
