    Protein Summary

    The gene TM1380 from Thermotoga maritima encodes a putative 16S ribosomal RNA methyltransferase PF04452 COG1867 EC:2.1.1.32 (based on 92% sequence identity with the RsmE gene from Thermotoga petrophila).  The other name for this enzyme is tRNA (guanine-N(2)-)-methyltransferase.   The enzyme catalyzes the following reaction: S-adenosyl-L-methionine + tRNA = S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine + tRNA containing N2-methylguanine. The genome vicinity of TM1380 includes the seryl-tRNA synthetase serS (TM1379).

    Pre-SCOP classfies 1z85 structure as follows: the 1-66 fragment inside the PUA domain-like superfamily, YggJ N-terminal domain-like family; the C-terminal 68-215 fragment in the alpha/beta knot superfamily, YggJ C-terminal domain-like family. DALI top hits are with the AQ165 protein PDB:2egv (Z=20), HI0303 protein PDB:1nxz (Z=20) and a putative methyltransferase PDB:3kw2(Z=20).
